¿What are the main neighborhoods in Buenos Aires?

For Exploring on Foo
Microcentro Porteño

PLAZA DE MAYO
When planning your trip to Buenos Aires, it’s essential to start at the city’s founding site. Plaza de Mayo, located in the downtown area, is the most important and oldest square.
Talking about Plaza de Mayo is a great introduction to the city. Many significant events in the nation’s history took place here. In the same area, you can also visit landmarks such as the Casa Rosada, the renowned Cabildo, and the famous Metropolitan Cathedral, the former cathedral of Pope Francis.
SAN TELMO
From the downtown area itself, heading south, you can visit the quintessential Bohemian neighborhood. It’s a neighborhood perfect for walking and wandering, getting lost among colonial architecture facades, interiors of old tenement houses, and corners filled with antique shops.
If you’re lucky enough to explore this neighborhood on a Sunday, you can experience the famous Dorrego Square market. It’s the second oldest square after Plaza de Mayo. This street market features tango performances, local cuisine, and antiques wherever you step
Tango, La Bombonera, Restaurantes
LA BOCA
It’s a must-visit, but with the same emphasis, we must recommend being cautious. Arrive by taxi, take the famous hop-on hop-off tourist bus, or opt for a guided tour, as it can be dangerous to walk alone in the surrounding areas.
It’s the most unique neighborhood in Buenos Aires, founded in 1536, where immigrants looking for work once arrived. To this day, it retains houses constructed from wood and metal sheets, painted in countless vibrant colors derived from leftover paint from the port.
On its main street, ‘Caminito’, you will find numerous artists’ stalls and you can also see tango dancers performing in the street.
You will also find the stadium of the famous international soccer team Boca Juniors, better known as La Bombonera, where you can take a tour or perhaps even watch a soccer match.

PALERMO
North of the heart of the city, you will find the largest neighborhood known as Palermo. It is the preferred place to stay for those visiting the city
In this neighborhood, you’ll find the best restaurants, fashion designer stores, trendy bars, and nightclubs. Also, in terms of tourism, this area offers several places to visit, such as Plaza Serrano, the Botanical Garden, the Japanese Garden, and El Rosedal.

PUERTO MADERO
Along the coast of the renowned Rio de la Plata, you will find the modern skyscrapers of Puerto Madero, framing the city’s financial center.
The perfect blend of modernity, safety, and nature makes Puerto Madero a highly recommended visit, with large pedestrian areas and natural reserves for walks among docks and beautiful river views.
A neighborhood that pays tribute to women. All its streets are named after renowned women in the arts, sciences, politics, and culture, and it also features the most iconic landmark, the Puente de la Mujer (Women’s Bridge).

TIGRE
If there’s something that truly makes the destination unique, it’s undoubtedly Tigre, a blend of an Amazon-like setting, brimming with nature and water, and a Venice-like concept, as many people live there with the unique feature of having water streets.
A very unique mix where you’ll find colonial mansions, aristocratic rowing clubs, hundreds of craft shops, and a river station that serves as a gateway to an unparalleled natural world: the Paraná River Delta.
You should allocate an early start to a full day for visiting the Tigre Delta, as it is located 32 kilometers from the city center.
GASTRONOMIA
Buenos Aires is the gateway to many of Argentina’s delights, where you’ll find the essence of the immigrants who settled here in the 19th century with menus from Spain, Italy, Germany, complemented by the Andean cuisine of neighboring countries….
In Buenos Aires, you can enjoy ‘submarinos’ (hot chocolate) and the famous ‘mate’ (yerba tea) in many charming cafes, as well as the best pizzas, empanadas, and savor a juicy ‘asado’ (fire-cooked meat), all in a city that’s constantly evolving with creations blending top-quality contemporary dishes.
